The 50mm focal length is my favourite to use for creative fashion photography. This photoshoot is an on-location e-commerce shoot for Australian designer Suzi Rose. The brief was to create fun, natural images of the model. We needed to capture both creative poses and poses where you can see more of the outfit.
The 50mm is my lens of choice for jobs like this due to the way the focal length looks. The 35mm is usually my lens of choice for on-location portrait photography. This lens however has high distortion when taking photos of people - especially full body shots. While I enjoy this look for some portrait sessions, the distortion doesn't suit an e-commerce shoot. The photos we are taking will be displayed on the designer's website so they need to have a particular look.
Another option would be to use an 85mm lens. I find the compression of this lens renders images that look "too pretty". High compression, depth of field and bokeh are not usually sought after in fashion photography. For that reason, I choose the focal length in between - a 50mm. I am using the Canon 50mm f1.2L on the Canon 5Dmk4 for this photoshoot.
