The Samyang AF 85mm f1.4 FE is an auto-focus telephoto prime lens that I am using on the full frame Sony A7iii. This 85mm is a budget-friendly counter option to the Sony GM 85mm f1.4. If you want to see a full review of the Sony GM 85mm f1.4 you can check that out here.
From my experience with portrait photography, both the Samyang and Sony 85mm f1.4 lenses produce similar results. Both lenses render sharp images with nice depth of field and clean bokeh. The Sony 85mm f1.4 has a slight advantage when it comes to autofocus accuracy. However, the Samyang 85mm is powerful enough to get the job done during a portrait session or a wedding. I would feel confident using either lens for a client photoshoot.
During this portrait photoshoot, we were shooting during golden hour and I made use of backlight. You can see the different lens flares from the Samyang 85mm. The lens flares range from prominent red arches, to softer flares that blend into your photo.
85mm is my 2nd favourite focal length to use for portrait photography. My favourite focal length is the 35mm, my current 35mm of choice is the Sony GM 35mm f1.4. Used in combination, these 2 lenses can render some amazing results for a portrait session. I have also used the Samyang 35mm f1.8 EF lens on the Sony A7C during a portrait session. This is another small, light weight and budget lens with great results from Samyang.
Watch the behind the scenes review video below to see how the Samyang AF 85mm f1.4 FE performs in the field. I share 100% crop, SOOC images to see the quality and sharpness. I test autofocus speed and accuracy when capturing a range of portraits from closeups to full body movement shots.
