Macro Lens Portrait Photography: Tokina Firin 100mm f2.8 FE + Sony A7IV
The Tokina Firin 100mm f2.8 Macro is a prime lens for Sony E-mount. I am using this lens on the Sony A7IV in the studio. I am using the Silvertone backdrop from Superior for a minimal look to today’s beauty photoshoot. I styled Bella in an off the shoulder top so we don't have any outfits or fabrics distracting from the portraits.
The lighting setup for today's photoshoot is simple, effective and easy to recreate. I am using a large, round softbox placed one meter away from Bella and angled down 45 degrees to face her. I have a honeycomb grid on the softbox to make the light more directional so it doesn’t bounce against the backdrop. Watch the video to see the placement of the lighting! I, of course, also took some natural light portraits towards the end of our photoshoot. The studio we are using has huge windows with beautiful natural light. I HAD to use it!
The Tokina Firin 100mm f2.8 Macro is a very barebones lens. It only features a focus ring. There is no AF to MF switch or any other buttons or switches on the lens. This 100mm macro focuses externally and has no OSS. I think OSS would be a nice feature to have on a macro lens, but not completely necessary if you are already using it on a camera body with IBIS. I didn't experience much if any motion blur during my time testing it out. This Tokina 100mm macro lens has a 55mm filter thread and weighs 570 grams.
A focus range limiter switch would have been a nice addition to this lens. I was struggling with autofocus a couple of times during our photoshoot. For example, I was taking 1:1 photos of Bella's eye. When I wanted to capture standard portraits the lens would get stuck and is hunting for focus within macro range. This is my only downside of this lens. On the other hand, the Tokina 100mm macro produces sharp and good quality results.
Watch my behind the scenes video below to hear all my thoughts about this Tokina Firin 100mm f2.8 macro lens. I share 1:1 crops of the unedited, SOOC photos so you can see the quality of the lens.
