Sigma 85mm F1.4 ART on Sony A7iii

The Sigma 85mm f1.4 ART is an EF mount lens I am using on the Sony A7iii. I decided to grab the EF version so I could also compare this lens to the Canon 85mm f1.2 on the Canon 5D mkiv. Since I have a Metabones 4 adaptor, I also wanted to do a portrait photoshoot with the Sigma 85mm on the Sony A7iii.

While adapted lenses don't tend to have as strong autofocus performance and accuracy as native glass, this Sigma performed well on the A7iii body. I found that eye-af was keeping track of my subject's eye the majority of the time. Watch the behind the scenes video of our portrait photoshoot below to hear my thoughts.

The Sigma AF 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Art is a budget friendly portrait photographer's dream lens. The 85mm is perfect for portrait photography due to its telephoto nature and this Sigma version is no exception. This 85mm has wonderful sharpness, great background to foreground separation and beautiful bokeh!

There are 2 other 85mm f1.4 lens options that I love for my Sony A7iii. The first is a lens that I own, the Sony GM 85mm f1.4. This is an absolutely gorgeous lens with fast and accurate autofocus. I use it primarily for portrait and wedding photography. However, this is a high end and high budget lens. I personally believe it's worth the money for the results it produces!

The Sony FE 85mm F1. 4 GM was released in February, 2016 so it is starting to become an older lens in Sony's line up. In 2021, Sony also released the new GM 50mm f1.2 - which if you haven't checked it out yet you absolutely should! This gives me hope that Sony might be working on a new 85mm lens, perhaps this time they will release a GM 85mm f1.2. I can dream!

The second 85mm option for Sony that I highly recommend is the Samyang 85mm f1.4 AF lens. Like the Sigma, this is a more budget friendly option for a portrait lens to add to your camera bag. I loved the results I achieved with this Samyang 85mm f1.4 lens. The autofocus and eye-AF performance during our portrait photoshoot was strong and accurate. I would say it's just a step under the GM 85mm f1.4 in terms of performance.
