Sony GM 24-70mm f2.8 MK2 Lens Review Photo and Video

The Sony GM 24-70mm f2.8 MKII is a lightweight standard zoom lens for Sony E mount. This lens weighs an impressive 695 grams and uses four XD linear motors to achieve fast autofocus. You can also use this lens to shoot up to 30fps in stills in camera bodies such as the Sony A1. Check out my review of the GM 24-70mm f2.8 mkII in the video below. I take this lens out on location to a portrait photoshoot in natural light. I share unedited 1:1 view photo examples at various focal lengths throughout our shoot. I've also included comparison images to other Sony GM zoom lenses, prime lenses and third party lenses.

I also used the Sony GM 24-70mm f2.8 MKII on the Sony A7sIII to test out the autofocus capabilities and image quality for video. You can see 4K 50p examples of this in my review video below. This lens was loaned to me by Sony Australia. This video or blog post is not sponsored by Sony, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lens build

The Sony GM 24-70mm f2.8 mk1 weighs 886 grams, compared to the GM 24-70mm f2.8 mk2 which weighs only 695 grams. I used both during my portrait photoshoot at the same time, and I could really feel the weight difference when switching lenses. Not only is it small in size, this mk2 also features an aperture ring. The GM 24-70mm f2.8 mk2 includes an AF to MF switch, a Smooth to Tight switch to change the feel of the zoom ring and 2 custom buttons. It also features an Iris Lock switch and a Click switch for the aperture ring. The GM 24-70mm f2.8 mk2 is still an external zoom lens and has the same 82mm filter thread as the mark 1. GM 24-70mm f2.8 mk2 Portrait photography

The Sony GM 24-70mm f2.8 mk2 is an extremely sharp lens. It matches nicely in sharpness, image quality and colours SOOC to the Sony GM 70-200mm f2.8 mk2. Throughout my review video, I share comparison images taken at similar focal lengths to other lenses. These include: Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8, Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2, Samyang 24-70mm f2.8, GM 70-200mm f2.8 MKII (review linked above), GM 35mm f1.4, GM 50mm f1.2 and GM 85mm f1.4. That is a LOT of links of reviews and behind the scenes to check out!

This 24-70mm f2.8 mk2 has 11 aperture blades, so the bokeh looks circular from 24mm all the way to 70mm. In my opinion, the bokeh looks very clean and round. I have included bokeh examples at all the main focal lengths of this lens for you to have a closer look at in the sample gallery. You can download this at the bottom of this blog post. Again, please check out my review video to see all the example images and hear my full thoughts on this lens!
