85mm vs 100mm vs 135mm for Portrait Photography
The 85mm, 100mm and 135mm are all popular prime lens choices when it comes to portrait photography. We are going to be putting each lens to the test during a portrait session to see the differences. In this portrait photoshoot we are going to be using:
FE 85mm F1.4 GM
FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS
FE 135mm F1.8 GM
All these lenses are being used on the full frame mirrorless Sony A7iii camera body. Watch the video below to see a comparison of each lens in different portrait photography scenarios. We test out full body portraits to see the difference in background compression. We also compare mid length portraits and closeup headshots. Each series of photos is up side by side in the video so you can compare which focal length is better suited for your needs.
I personally love using the GM 85mm f1.4 for portrait photography, it renders beautifully sharp images even when shooting wide open. Since the announcement of the GM 50mm f1.2 lens, I’ll be curious to see if the GM 85mm f1.2 is a lens we can look forward to in 2022.
