this week: on the road

this week was spent driving from shoot to shoot. dan and i spent one day photographing in the southern highlands, the next day shooting in sydney and the day after that shooting a campaign on a misty northern beaches shore. i can't say that this was a big week just yet though! next week is even bigger, with three campaign shoots for brands and a location scouting day for a campaign i'm shooting the week after that. i've never loved doing what i do more than i do right now <3

this week: white sands

in january, your clothes stick to your skin and cracks form in the pavement from the hot sun and balmy nights. to escape the temperature and make the most of the crystal clear days we've been experiencing, dan and i went on a road trip to a beach known for its white sand and turquoise waters, jervis bay. we arrived after a long drive and walked down the forest track to the beach. it was so windy the sand was whipping and stinging our legs. we put our things down and were about to get into the water when a couple of people came up to us to point out a shadow in the water that was swimming back and forth to the shore, which turned out to be a shark! safe to say we didn't end up swimming there.

instead, we set off to find another beach (there are so many stunning beaches in the area), and came across this beautifully secluded pocket in the jervis bay area. we dipped in the water for a couple of hours in the setting sun. when our fingers were wrinkled, we got out of the ocean and sat on the beach watching the clear waves crash on the white sand. we stayed there until we were the only ones left on the beach. family after couple after person arrived and left until we were alone.

on our drive home, we stopped to let a wild echidna cross the road and then watched the bats migrate north at dusk.

sea spray

my last shoot of the year (and first shoot blog post of this year!) was spent at the beach on a beautifully overcast day. the ocean was angry and with every wave that crashed against the rocks we were shooting on, the sea spray covered us from head to toe. little droplets kept covering my lens and i would spend every couple of camera clicks wiping it down before i could care less. and so, towards the end i photographed with my lens dripping in water, which i think created some lovely hazy images (the last couple of photos in this post!). this was such a wonderful shoot to end 2014 on. we only spent about an hour and half taking pictures but we made every moment count before our skin was too covered in goosebumps to continue.

this week: sydney beaches

this week: sydney beaches

1. a flock of seagulls flying over while we were shooting a campaign for 3inch fashion. 2. behind the scenes of dan filming megan. 3. a lady sitting next to us. i snapped this photo while lidija was doing megan's makeup, the lady was drawing everyone she saw on the beach and writing little paragraphs. maybe she made up a story for each stranger she saw, i never asked but i thought i'd take a picture of the watcher. 4. picking up seashells in between photos. 5. my beautiful, ever changing office for one of the days this week. 6. in the studio photographing sian for the 3inch fashion lookbook. 7. beautiful jewellery from mallow & thyme finding their way in the mail to me.

sometimes i dream of living in europe. in a little wooden cabin lost somewhere in the tall forest of pine trees. life would be simple. we'd watch the snow fall through the window in the winter and the wild deer run through in the spring. weeks like this though remind me how beautiful sydney is and today i am happy living here and being able to call these endless cliffs and angry oceans my home. my week started off in the countryside, where i wandered with my clients through the fields in the rain and fog filming and taking pictures. after a quiet start, everything changed pace when i spent two days shooting in busy sydney for 3inch fashion. we spent one day photographing their lookbook in the studio and the second day on location for the campaign. i was shooting with megan as i have many times before. every time i shoot with her it reminds me why i love what i do so much, everything is fun and free, so much movement and nothing feels like work. we just have fun taking pictures.

the rest of my week was spent at christmas parties with fellow photographers, doing some christmas shopping and catching up on what feels like a million and one things to edit. oh, not to mention i planned a few last minute shoots that will be simple but beautiful. i am itching to shoot a few personal projects before the end of the year so i thought now is a good time as any!

this week: pictures & presents

this week: pictures & presents

1. i received this beautiful handmade camera strap in the mail from colibri. i can't wait to shoot with it and post some behind the scene pictures! 2. fish swimming in a pond. i snapped this in between looks at a shoot in an extremely hot greenhouse. 3 & 4. shooting editorials for print magazines. 5. shooting for lovestoned on a windy beach. we watched a storm roll in over the ocean.

i want to try something a little bit different for my blog. on a shoot recently i was chatting my makeup artist abbey love who gave me the lovely idea of doing weekly blog posts. this is something i have wanted to do for a while, bring my blog back to a personal level, back where it was when i first started it. so here is my first installation of my 'this week' blog posts. i spent the week shooting, driving around sydney city picking up replacement paper backdrops for lookbook shoots i have coming up, location scouting for a campaign i have next week, receiving magazines i have been published in in the mail, more shooting and watching lightning storms sweep the sydney skies every afternoon for the past week.

let me know what you think of this new section in my blog!

chase carter for ladyluna campaign

a few weeks ago dan and i were on board for a two day shoot for lady luna, an online boutique. we spent day one in the studio photographing over 80 different looks, which you can see on their website or my website too (just scroll to the bottom of the lookbook page)! day two was spent shooting on location for the campaign, in two different lovely secluded beaches in sydney. we had an amazing sunny day to work with and gorgeous clothes from lady luna to play around with while jumping from rock to rock taking pictures. all the campaign photos are edited with eden from digital film actions.

winter, 2014

i took winter as a chance to refocus my energy and reassess my priorities. after a big and busy beginning of the year, i was feeling completely overwhelmed with the amount of things i had to do. i spent too many days stressing and nights not sleeping over things that seem so unimportant now. i felt like it was time for a change so i decided to take a few weeks off, and it has made the world of a difference.

i've begun to make time to do things for myself, which means going on roadtrips to pretty places with dan, i started blogging and writing again, i've been going on my daily walks/jogs again, i planned a small trip to melbourne with my best friend and started putting together ideas for my personal photography again. i feel so much happier and even though i'm taking time away from work to do these things, i feel like i have more time than ever now.

in saying that, it's still a work in progress. running your own business is hard work. there is always an endless list of things to do, emails to reply to, meetings to go to, shoots to work on, deadlines to meet with editing pictures and a million other things. but i feel like i'm taking a step in the right direction. here is my winter in pictures.

don't forget! you can now click on most of the images in my blog post to find out what preset they were edited with :)

the great ocean road

the great ocean road

the australian coastline is one of my favourite places to be. i have always loved our beautiful beaches, rolling meadows and cliffs with angry waves. in new south wales, dan and i spend most of our time exploring the coast, so while sam and i were visiting melbourne, the great ocean road was something we had to do.

we woke up before the sunrise and walked through the tired-eyed city to get breakfast before heading off on our long drive. the great ocean road is an amazing drive through winding mountains, with roads lining the sea and dwelling through canopies of trees. we stopped at more lookouts and beaches than we could count, walked through one of the oldest forests in victoria, lost our breath while climbing up steep staircases on the side of cliffs, were almost swallowed by the sea while taking pictures on the rocks near the 12 apostles and took a helicopter ride (my first!) to see the amazing view.

this was my second time on the great ocean road, and it's something i would probably do every time i go to visit victoria. there's just something about that place that i love. maybe it's that you get to roadtrip and be constantly surrounded by beautiful landscapes, that the view is ever changing and ever beautiful, when you stop at the top of a mountain and look out you are lost for a minute while taking it all in. maybe it's because every time you go back it will all be a little bit different, or maybe it's just a magical place for me.

either way, these are my photos from our roadtrip through the great ocean road to the 12 apostles.

melbourne

during august, my best friend sam and i made a last minute decision to visit melbourne. we wanted to go on a little adventure, so we bought tickets and headed off. i've been to melbourne twice, so this trip was my third time. after traveling to europe last year, when i explored melbourne this time, it reminded me of a mini london somehow. there was constantly little reminders of that beautiful european city that i kept seeing while strolling the streets of melbourne.

we spent a few days in the city and one day on the great ocean road (that blog post will be coming tomorrow!). we spent every minute walking around and taking pictures, we ate more than we probably should have (there were just too many amazing food choices!), we got lost on the trams, explored all the little streets and laneways, slept too little and got rained on while walking around. it was an amazing trip to say the least, melbourne does it for me every time. it's a beautiful, creative little city and i can't wait for next time!

apple cheeked blossom

before the sun had risen, dan and i were driving through heavy rain and thick fog on our way to newcastle to shoot for white magazine's spring issue. we warmed our bones with coffee and chatted the whole way there. a couple of hours into driving (lots of aw-ing and ah-ing at the beautiful landscapes we zoomed past on the way) and we had arrived and our beautiful location for the day - a big garden that has been tended to with what looks like lots of love and care throughout the years. we drove through the big gates and down a little dirt road lined with orange trees.

we walked past the rose gardens and made our way to a cosy cottage where the team was getting ready for our day of shooting. the rest of the day was spent changing into pretty dresses and wandering the gardens, shooting in the countless locations we found along the way. somehow the rain had magically stopped by the time we started shooting and we even had a few minutes of lovely sunlight here and there, something that we weren't expecting or waiting for at all. these are the wonderful people that let this shoot come to life:
